Let me start by saying that I srongly espouse your idea of the concept of Life Long Learning. Actually, we all learn as long as we live. It is often the case that

the transition from academic to business career is a bit dificult. First, what we learn most in our academic career is theoretical, as Ingrid stresses. Second, a professional career requires skils that normally are aquired by doing. Third, in our academic career, those skils are no taught just because academic careers revolve around the acquisition of, say, theoretical knowledge. It it because of these that when one passes from the academic to the professional career, most, if not all professions require a supervised practical work. This is the case, for example, of physicians, lawyers, clinical psychologist, and so forth. It is often the case that brilliant students in the academia are only reasonable if not mediocre professionals. So, one thing is to acquire theoretical knowledge and another, quite different thing in to apply it in an business career. In other words, there is a big gap between theoretical intelligence and practical intelligence.

I went the other way, going from a career in law enforcement and government to teaching. The key is to find out what matters in your new profession. What is considered to be important. Then use your acquired skills to achieve those things.

Dear Stuart H. Weinstein! Thanks for your reply! A great way to complement the two activities! In my personal practice, I view my work as a teacher at a number of universities rather as a hobby. But I first got 15 years of practical work experience, including 10 years of experience as a C-level manager in a number of companies, including international (like CMO, CTO, CIO), as well as some work experience as a business consultant and founder of my own consulting company. Moreover, I defended my doctoral dissertation as an active assistant professor at the university. And I also combine business consulting and teaching activities in bachelor's, master's and supplementary education programs in both classical and technical universities.

If your question is a theoretical one and not related to your own position, then my answer would be the following. A marketing matrix, product-market matrix by Igor Ansoff, can be adapted to this situation with the horizontal axis being “existing customers” and ”new customers”, and the vertical axis being “existing expertise, skills and knowledge” and “new skills and knowledge”. This makes four fields.

Usually moving from field 1 to field 4, from the field “existing skills and existing customers” to “new skills and new customers” is practically impossible. What can be more successful is to move from field 1 to field 2, using existing skills expanding from existing customers to new customers. Or moving from field 1 to field 3, using new skills for existing customers, i.e. a new service for existing customers.

In the theoretical situation where a 100% academic wants to do something completely new, what could work is using teaching skills in a business situation for example becoming a trainer OR doing something new for students such as becoming a student counsellor after doing therapeutic training.

in the first example further progress is possible after a few years of doing business trainings, one could become a human resource professional in businesses. In the second example further progress is possible when after a few years of experience as a student counsellor one could start a therapy or counselling practice in society for adolescents and adults.

Some degrees such as Executive DBA requires 3 to 5 years of senior management or executive experience so keeping that in mind, all is relevant. It is about the passion to learn not necessarily through academia.
