I am studying compressive force-displacement curves for Styrofoam using DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis), to study the static compressive force-displacement.

The parameters are: Max Load= 9 N and Max Displacement =1mm.

As per my understanding, under a given frequency (1 Hz), both the force and displacement were supposed to increase linearly until the max displacement of 1 mm reached.

Instead, the force kept on going up and then down and back up, while the displacement increase linearly. As a result I am getting weird stress-strain curve and can't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated. Raw data, graphs and screenshot of parameters included. Thanks in advance.

Equipment: Perkin-Elmer DMA 8000
