Understanding Downwelling and Upwelling radiations in MEMLS (Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snow pack)?

Greetings all,

Sorry this could be probably a very basic question. I am trying to understand snow emission model - "Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snow packs (MEMLS)". It makes use of 6 flux theory for simulating snow emissions for varying snow conditions at different microwave frequencies. (www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0034425799000462). I am unable to understand how upwelling and downwelling brightness temperatures (Aj, Bi) (given in equation 1 and 2 equate to the terms given on right hand side. I am attaching the page for your reference.
