I have different carbide powders (+50/-150 microns) and would like to assess which one has the best toughness (impact resistance). What would be the best method to characterize the toughness of carbide powders ?
The simplest would be the controlled grinding tests: You take a laboratory mill (ball mill, attritor or other), fill it with a certain amount of carbide powder and let the mill run for a certain time. After grinding you do the particle size analysis. So you repeat this grinding test with all carbide powders (under the same conditions!). After all the tests and particle size analyzes, you can see which powder can be more or less crushed: the powder that can be crushed the least is your favorite with the highest impact resistance.
