Recently i estimated Chlorophyll in mangroves plant under 2 weeks of non-essential metal.My result is showed different attitude that as concentration higher,chlorophyll also higher( chl a & chl b) both,as compare to non-stress plants.
I am so confused regarding result. Kindly comment and suggest the possible reasons .
Stress increases chlorophyll content, especially in C3 plants. But increasing essential elements, such as nitrogen, will decrease chlorophyll content
There are some reports that showed higher chlorophyll content in crop plants under abiotic stress(Alaei 2011; and Khayatnezhad 2011).
some authors interpreted these results (higher chlorophyll under stress) as the tolerance strategy of plant.
However, the impact of stress on plants vary according to their type and intensity. the increment in chlorophyll contents under drought stress might be due to the removal of water from leaves as a result chlorophyll molecules concentrated in the chloroplast hence it seems that chlorophyll content increases but this effect should not be implicated in prolonged stresses where chlorophyll degradation occurs.
