We come across a lot of points both in favour of, and against implementation of FACTS. If you are asking whether inclusion of FACTS devices can solve power flow problems at large - well, ideally speaking the answer is that it probably can !

But there are two serious considerations that need to be taken into account when going for such projects:

It is because of these two reasons that you don't see utilities installing FACTS devices as and where they please. Rather they take a cautious, well thought out approach.

Hi bishal just curious, as you know nepal has a peak shortage of around 400 MW. Technically, you can't run the loadflow nor the opf. However, you can always run it by considering a large slack bus then existing which may give wrong information about power-flows in the line. How are you addressing this problem?

The advantage of FACTs devices have over a classic type of equipment to serve the same function, SVC or STATCOM compare with shunt capacitor, TCSC compare with series capacitor, is a high speed control capability. Thus, FACTs devices can be used to cope with various types of dynamics or transient phenomenon occurred in a system (with proper function and control). According to the fact that the price of most type of FACTs devices are expensive. Thus, the design of controller under transient mode and enhance benefits used under normal operation is the key issue. Accordingly, to reduce operation cost (most popular objective function) under OPF framework by using FACTs devices instead of using equivalent equipment or upgrading transmission system without considering transient mode of operation is impractical.

U are absolutely  spot on.  Since Nepalese  power grid is always in the power deficit  condition,   typical and conventional opf makes no sense.  However,  what i am trying to do here is minimize  the transmission  loss in the grid even during the condition of power  deficit considering that the effective load will always  be less than the generated power because  of load shedding from LDC...  Also,  i am trying to use transmission  line loss  function as optimization  function instead of generation cost as most of the generating stations in nepal are hydro power based and  generation or operation cost are almost constant  and negligible.  

Please let me know your thoughts.  I am just trying to modify the convention  optimization  technique in relevence of national grid of Nepal.  But i am yet to check its technical viability..

Yes , the UPFC is a good FACT in this action and you cab use it  in Matlab simulink

yes, FACTS are useful in optimal load flow studies.
