What is the usual finish for a Ti64 bone plate? If I want to perform an in-vitro cytotoxicity test on a Ti64 bone plate, what would be the best way to sterilize them if I am fabricating them myself?
It depends how you want to package the plate for sale. If you plan on having them in a non-sterile package, it would be wise to do your testing using an autoclave and get the correct parameters for sterility for FDA approval. If you plan on packaging them in a sterile package, then it would be wise to do a Gamma sterilization for the testing. This would allow you to spend your time and money on what the finished product would be using. If it is just for research and you will not be selling these, then autoclave is the quickest and cheapest way to go and I agree with Gernot to just go to a clinic or a hospital that does implants and ask them to use their autoclave.
The best ways to sterilize the Ti64 alloy for medical implant application are sterilized with autoclave, gamma irradiation, oxygen plasma, or ultraviolet light.
