I am trying to simulate a process similar to friction stir spot welding with the primary difference that in my case the tool is deformable and I want to capture the deformation of the tool. The material being used is SAE 4340 steel alloy with Johnson-Cook material model and rate dependency. So far I have not been successful in capturing the deformation and for this reason, I thought of making the lower part of the tool Eulerian while keeping the upper half Lagrangian. I know that this might not be a good approach but I can only think either of this approach or use a different material model more suitable to my process. I am not considering the second option because I am not sure which material model would be a good replacement for Johnson-Cook model along with data availability criteria. I have found 4 different sets of Johnson-Cook model parameters for 4340 with high variation amongst them. The parameters which I'm using are as follows:

A=1150 MPa, B=739 MPa, n=0.26, m=1.03, C=0.014, epsilon dot=1

I need to specify feed rate (translation & angular velocities) to the Eulerian part of tool which I think can be done by tieing it to the Lagrangian part.

Please let me know your opinion about my approach and suggestion for giving feed to the Eulerian part(material).

I can understand as I think this approach has not been taken earlier. However can you please verify if we can specify velocity and angular velocity to a cylindrical object made of Eulerian material.

I apologize once again if I wasn't clear in my earlier answers. I have gone through documentation and it seems that we cannot specify velocity to Eulerian nodes. Although we can specify zero-displacement boundary conditions. I am trying a different approach now, instead of specifying velocity and rotation to Eulerian part I have specified it to the other part of the model which will come into contact with this Eulerian part.

Since its been a while, perhaps you already resolved this issue. I was also trying something similar. I used the tie constraint between Lagrangian surface and Eulerian mesh. It seems to be working fine. The key was that in the constraint definition: I made geometrical surface selection for Lagrangian body and nodal for Eulerian.

I am working on similar topic and I am trying to put in rotation my eulerian domain. One simple solution may be is to rotate the entire eulerian domain, however in some case, especially for IFW you need to tranfer not only the rotational speed but also the energy given by the large inertia contained within the flywheel.  I am working activetly on this if you would like to share your approach I will try to support you, if you need any help. Regarding this challenge, my big concern is regarding the possibility to assign different interaction properties across the eulerian domain. It is possible? How it is accurate?
