Chlorella strains maintain the glucose uptake with a hexose/proton symporter membrane protein. Each consumed glucose molecule increases the pH of the fermentation broth by the decreased concentration of protons (Heterotrophic cultures of microalgae: Metabolism and potential products, Perez-Garcia, 2010). This indicated that, when Chlorella strains were cultured on glucose heterotrophically it is beneficial if the pH is controlled automatically with acids. This technique is used in many studies.

What biological process is behind the cultivation of Schizochytrium sp., where the pH decreases during the cultivation on glucose?

Thank you very much!
