How do students' attention and memory affect their performance on assessments and what pedagogical practices can be implemented to improve these skills?
Ivonaldo Silva Student-centered classroom activities positively affect students' retention, thus, enhances their engagement/performance on assessments. Good example of pedagogical approaches/practices are: cooperatively learning, collaborative learning, constructivism, exploratory learning, and others. In fact, you can create your own your teaching approaches based on the learning styles of your students.
From my perspective, assessments performance is most dependent of reasoning and problem resolution capabilities, as well interpretation of questions. Nonetheless, enriching classes with affective contents, which activates other memory centers, and providing associations with familiar subjects is a good approach.
Professor Zoncita D. Norman and Professor Tulio Brandão Xavier-Rocha,
Thank you for your contributions.
For some time now, I have been studying the issues of predictive factors for success in large-scale assessments such as PISA and, specifically in Brazil, SAEB.
The performance levels presented by Brazilian students in both the PISA and SAEB assessments are far from being considered satisfactory. In this context, some debates have arisen as an attempt to find alternatives for the educational development of these students.
There are several teaching methods used in Brazilian schools, including well-designed and planned teaching materials, aimed at the academic development of students. However, based on the results presented, it can be seen that they have not had positive effects.
In view of all this, and based on some studies already conducted, there is still concern regarding the level of attention and retention of content presented in class by students. Are students motivated to learn? If so, in what way? If not, why not?
Finally, based on these concerns, we are studying and researching, with the aim of finding alternatives that can direct the efforts of everyone involved in the school environment towards better academic performance for these young people.
