I have a silicone part that will come in contact with food. It will need to pass FDA tests for hexane extraction of silicone residues. Is there a method I can use to remove uncured material and subsequently measure how much residue I have left? I do not have access to NMR, mass spec, ftir. I was thinking about trying Thin later chromatograph, but unsure of the stain.
Can you just filter your extract, then evaporate the filtrate to dryness to measure total migration?
Silicones are widespread contaminations in food, resulting from their ubiquitous utilisation in different processing and environmental or agricultural practices.
A suitable methodology for assessing the cleaning efficiency had already been developed.
The process of achieving this include;
1. Preparation of Test Plates
2. Measuring the contact angle
3. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Spectroscopy stabilisation, instrumental setting and testing
4. Lastly, calculating the surface energy
Up to now, the most efficient cleaners are commercially available agents specifically designed for silicone removal.
A common practice to get rid of uncured material and/or curing by-products of silicone materials is to submit the article to post curing e.g. 4 h at 200 °C. But not all silicone materials will be able to withstand these conditions. It depends on the composition/cure technology.
