Thanks for opening with your question a pertinent forum on the most promising topics to investigate. When it comes to sustainable approaches in general all topics are of great importance. But, if you are interested in a particular application (let say desalination, EOR, Industrial processes steam generation, centralized and decentralized electricity production, HVAC, etc) then for a particular site it narrows the topic you need to investigate. It depends on the solutions you are looking for your problem. e.g.: we have nearly 1 billion people without water and electricity in remote areas, in this case optimizing  decentralized Hybrid renewable energy systems performances is a very important topic:

Now if you ask for one or three  important topics to foster sustainable actions in the next decade then I would say: smart grids, clean technologies, decision support systems?

I agree with you. I think there are more correct answers to my question, not only one, because they depend on the site, the country, the culture, etc...

At the end of this survey I would like to generate a sort of world map with different combinations of topics for different areas. I expect the Italian scenario requests investments to find a solution for social needs which are different from those in Algeria...which are different from those in India, USA, etc...
