Does anyone know about a power grid simulator for Smart Grid scenarios, easy to troubleshoot and with wide popularity among the research community?

I am just trying to figure out how to simulate the behaviour of the power grid with the inclusion of DERs and was wondering what would be the most suitable simulator that I can obtain for free.
