Gender discrimination is as old as Human Life in our society.. There is hardly any society where discrimination on the basis of sex is not present. Starting from upbringing to education, to property inheritance daughters are treated second to sons for they being women. The recent judgement of SC in India declaring that daughters will have inheritance rights equal to those of sons from properties of father, grand fathers and great grand fathers right from the codification of law in 1956 is really welcoming. Will this declaration be helpful in reducing the gender gap ?

Yes offcourse we all say that Male and female are equal but still in villages and even cities the most of the families they do indifference and injustice with especially girls women, so gender equality is must nowadays to carry forward the country to next level.
Indeed its a good step for gender equality, and it will surely help in empowerment of women and recognition which will enhance their social status.
However, question remains, does property relations of women determine gender equality? Then what about poor and landless women?
Again, past experiences on dowry related atrocities suggests strong associations with some sorts of property relation (money, jewellery, car or property) etc.
Therefore, we need more safeguards.
When we compare the developing countries' scenario regarding gender equality with the developed country, the ration of gender inequality is more than the later one which is a very alarming situation nowadays, as to be rectified in the coming years for positive benefits.
Itishree Padhi I think granting equal right to ancestral property has a very little to do with gender equality in its real sense.(However I am claiming it after showing full respect to the scholars who wrote in contrast to my view).
The real thing that matters is women empowerment and their perticipation in the society. That brings power to their hand to choose the thing which they have choice on. Economic emancipation of women by socio-economically empowering them is much satistactory than looking for equal right on ancestral property.
