Does anyone have any suggestions for a Drosophila nomenclature guide or handbook for beginners? I recently started to work with Drosophila however I have no experience and the nomenclature is quite confusing. I'm looking for something either online or in print. It would also be helpful to see matching illustrations of genotypes and phenotypes. Thanks.

Due to the large amount of >1,100 species, this genus is probably not the easiest dipteran to work with...

sure that after having read some books on it, you'll need to go further and then I advice you to see at the UCSC site (http://genome-euro.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgGateway?redirect=manual&source=genome.ucsc.edu) what you could get interesting about your fly.

You may find the D. Elmo Hardy memorial volume to be of nterest, particularly Elmo's bio and the list of publications..
The most classical option is "The Genome of Drosophila Melanogaster" by Dan L. Lindsley. And the images of "Atlas of Drosophila morphology: Wild-type and classical mutants" by Chyb and Gompel looks great.
