Is syringaldazine a better substrate for laccase assay compared to ABTS? If the laccases are in particular active at acidic pH (3-5), how is it that with syringaldazine, alkaline pH is required (6-7) for laccase assay? Is it related to the chemical structure of the substrate?

ABTS is more commonly used as it has high redox potential. While, syringaldazine is difficult to dissolve and doesn't work well with laccase obtained from plant source. The pH changes according to the type of substrate being utilized and the source of laccase used.
