well i have just joined this group. i am a B.tech Biotechnology student and i am in the 4th year of my study.Although i dont have a strong background from neuroscience but i am really interested in the subject specially pertaining to the neurological disorders.Can anybody tell me what is the biology behind psychosis which is a common feature in most disorders?

In general psychotic symptoms vary from person to person these are very difficult to understand, and some of them are Organic Brain Disorders, Psychosis Due to Drugs and Alcohol, Mania, Disordered Thinking, Disordered Perception, Language Disorders like that...... Hallucinations are also a kind of psychotic disorder in which people may experienced with sights, things and sounds that are not actually present. I think you may like this explanation and one more thing i forgot to say you please dont become psycho by reading this...... ha... ha... hey just i am joking...... take care... bye...

But i am still not convinced. i am asking for physiology behind psychosis. how can a brain imagine some live objects and become so convinced that it is real. we are living in an era of science where we believe in things which happen more than once. i thought thats how the human brain is supposed to work not just believing in one's hallucinations.then how come brain of people with these disorders do so.
Your question i svery complex to answer: there is not data enough and probably experimental methodology to study some of the functiosn of the brain. For example, if you wish to know the differetn classes of the lipids in the brain, you will have problems to obtain data about the compex lipids (the main informationis about fatty acids but not about the real cehmical structures in the brain). On the other hand, the lectron transfer reactions are not well kown in biological systems... In conclussion we need to do a lot of job to began the understanding of the brain functions and why?
All have given good answers to Karishma's inquiry. The subject is multi discipline and Its due research in on in Psychology, anthropology, psychiatry. and other related sciences like medical sciences and other laboratories engaged in brain sciences. The psychosis is an individual problem it may creep due non-adjustment to social environment, ailments etc. But it is basically due to brain defects in the neurons and their functionality, the improper transmission sensory and motor informatics and formation of decision making. Infect there is a laboratory at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute engaged in brain research.
Karishma... what u r thinking about psychology is really good but till to date no one has understand our biological computer (Brain) completely, so we can't say exactly the mechanism behind the psychosis, just we can assume depending on brain functions what is what..... The biology, behind psychosis, tells that the neural functions, the neural circuitry, and the receptors and sensors that are responsible for transmission and dissemination of informatics and the analysis of these informatics, is a common feature in most disorders related to brain and behavior.
