Steel Poles are subjected to corrosion mainly at bottom level particularly at the junction of footing or at Ground level due to accumulation and penetration of water in poorly designed concrete foundation. Due to poor maintenance, and higher stress level at bottom lead further corrosion. Replacing of pole is costly solution resulting wastage of steel of replaced pole.
Dear Ishwar Sonar, there are many ways to do so:
1- By use galvanized poles.
2- By using weathering poles.
3- By using cathodic protection.
4- By using epoxy coating.
The problem that you have is similar to what is sometimes observed with steel pipes embedded in soil. Complete corrosion prevention is almost impossible but can be minimized by isolating the poles from the corrosive surroundings by:
- Passive methods (by paints, by plastics, by oxide coatings, by layer of another metal)
- Active methods (by optimum planned design, by the choice of more resistant materials or by cathodic protection)
I consider in this particular case to use cathodic protection which is easier and more effective. By this method the material to be protected becomes the cathode, and other metals are used as sacrificial anodes (e.g. zinc, aluminum or magnesium if steel is to be protected). The sacrificial anode has to be replaced after sometime.
