I am a beginner, looking to transition to R from SPSS. I am fairly comfortable using the SPSS platform but find it notoriously difficult to edit figures on SPSS outputs.
Thanks Luke. Yeah, it looks like a little bit of ground work is needed before I can navigate R. But it might be worthwhile in the long run, especially with a lot more researchers preferring R over other softwares.
I can't say enough about R Commander as a way to learn R. R Commander is a FREE menu driven point-and-click interface. My instructions for installing are here:

I also have a few examples of loading data (it reads spss files and others) as well as some quick demos to look at descriptives and so on.
There are several R Commander adds on to help with visualizations.

Yes, the R software is better than SPSS and many other Softwares, but the user needs a good training to perform analysis and other applications.
SPSS software under window has important feature, that is easy for the user and need simple training, so SPSS widely used.

R is a programming language contrary to SPSS which is a well-defined interface; Which implies that the R software is much more useful in the case of customized study.
