I have been searching and searching and cannot find an answer to this problem... I have a variable (Ref_Accepted_Comb) for the number of referrals accepted with values of (1=Yes, 2=No, 3=Can't Tell, 4=N/A). I have a second variable with the number of referrals accepted but then subsequently declined with values of (1=Yes, 2=No, 3=Can't Tell, 4=N/A).
I want to edit the Ref_Accepted_Comb or create a new variable that includes in 'yes' only cases that were accepted and not subsequently refused and add those cases that were subsequently refused to the 'no' value.
For illustration - Ref_Accepted_Comb has 52 yes cases and 3 no cases, yet 5 of these 'yes' cases were subsequently refused and so I want the end figures to show 47 yes cases and 8 no cases.
Please advise how I can do this??

For your specific query, syntax like the following may serve your intended purpose (if I've understood it correctly):
compute New_Var = 0 .
if ( (Ref_Accepted_Comb = 1) AND (Subsequent_Decline = 1) ) New_Var = 2 .
if ( (Ref_Accepted_Comb = 1) AND (Subsequent_Decline = 2)) New_Var = 1 .
if ( Ref_Accepted_Comb = 2) New_Var = 2 .
missing values New_Var (0) .
execute .
1 signifies "yes"; 2 signifies "no"; and 0 signifies a missing value for the new status variable (New_Var). A "yes" on the new status variable means "yes" on the Ref_Accepted_Comb AND "no" on the subsequently declined variable (Subsequent_Decline, or whatever you call it in your data set).

I want to suggest a simple way without complicated coding by simply three recodings.
At first use "recode into different variable" function for the first variable (ref count) to change the values in following manner:
1---> 1
2---> 0
3---> missing
4---> missing
Then do the same for the second variable as follows:
1---> 0
2---> 1
3---> missing
4---> missing
You simply can add these two columns together and recode the new variable values as follows:
0--->0
1---->0
2----> 1
Missing ----> missing
In the end by defining the variable values (1--> yes and 0 ---> no) and performing the descriptive analysis, you will get your desired results.
