I'm currently trying to motivate parts of my research and would need a good reference. In particular, I heard (and know) that Markov transition matrices (CTMC and DTMC) for chemical reaction networks are rather sparse. However, what I am still missing is a good reference stating that explicitly. Can anybody help me?

The sparseness of the transition matrix is kind of obvious if you have a big set of loosely connected chemical reactions. If you nevertheless feel you need a reference stating this, Hegland et. al, BIT Numer. Sure, the fact is more-less obvious if you're working in chemical reaction networks and the like; which I am not - I'm doing information theory, so I don't know the references. So, thanks again for your help!
