The upscaling of Pyrolysis with the input material wood chips from forests could be an opportunity to produce coal for industry' process heat demand. Backround are the CO2 prices and the defossilisation of the industry. I personally know only pyrolysis installation with an output of 500 t. The technic should have at least TRL 7.

I assume you are referring to slow pyrolysis processes, since you talk about capacity in terms of coal production. I cannot give you any clues on such topic.

Do you mean charcoal? If yes, then there are lots of established equipment that could probably produce as much as 20,000 t per year. Coal is a sedimentary rock, so it is not possible to coal from the slow pyrolysis of forest wood or chips. The product of slow pyrolysis of any wood or biomass materials is charcoal. Recently the term bio-coal has been adopted by industry types to refer to charcoal produced at low temperature through processes like torrefaction, liquefaction, and hydrothermal carbonisation. Others call the products of these processes hydrochar, biochar or bio-coal but not COAL. Good luck with your endeavour.

I know that many parts of the world want to produce charcoal and also in briquette form as a production process. Production of this magnitude of charcoal from biomass is a highly risky proposition since sustainable availability of raw biomass and the demand for charcoal must both be established sufficiently accurately for any investment proposition to make sense. We must remember such approaches may actually have serious adverse effects on climate and in the current environment of heightened sensitivity to environmental effects, one must review the proposition of producing charcoal in large scale before investment decisions are made. The process efficiency of the industry identified appears low and therefore needs additional review. Perhaps, one can process biomass directly and use them in thermal gasification whenever it is required unless the charcoal produced has demands other than thermal applications
There are now plants with this capacity in the US, Korea and several in China. All use rotary pyrolysis. Offgas is used the heat the kilns.

thank you for your remarks concerning sustainability. I am fully aware of it. My team is speciacliced for sustaniable biomass potential research. We are looking for woody residues which are in the landscape 200 km around the possible industry. Here we have a lot. And furthermore, we have to switch the use of firewood for private housholds towards industry.
