Modern medicine insists on curing patient who has cancer with sophisticated and expensive drugs. but statistics say these drugs can prolong the life for several months but with a lot of suffering, why physicians avoid palliative and alternative medicine to see the progress. I think it is the right of the patient to see all possible way to live with their own cancer and to decide the best way to survive.
Although Chemotherapy has many side effects and does not cure some cancers, but it decreases the rate of progress of cancer in the body to some extent. However, side effects can be altered by some treatments.
It is the duty of any oncologist to describe the benefits and drawbacks that he/she may expect from any recommended treatments. Sometimes a patient's priority is to prolong his/her life to witness a milestone in the family members (for examples his son's wedding). So he/she is ready to tolerate difficult treatments by any means just to survive longer. In the contrary, some may opt to live the remaining of their life without pain and in peace. The filed of oncology is "individualized" and we cannot decide on the same algorithm for all the patients.

If you have to choose between dying now or two years later you may choose the second option if you have small children. A physician is no God so he/she cannot really foretell only calculate probabilities for survival. What about S. Hawkins with ALS at the age of 21, his prognosis would have been 23 year at death, however he dies now at the age of 76 after discovering major thing of God's creation above our planet.
