I have extracted metabolite from a bacterial cell. I have to check the antimicrobial activity of metabolite. which solvent can I use to dissolve that metabolite as it contains both polar and non-polar compound.
It depends of the metabolite. If you know that are polar and non-polar compounds in your sample, DMSO may be the most suitable; however, if you want to use the metabolites for antimicrobial assessment, be sure to not surpass toxic doses of DMSO because your results may be false positives. In my case, less than 15% of DMSO has not been an issue for microdilution assays. If you only use extracelullar metabolites for antimicrobial assays, you can purify the compounds throughout solvents but recover the compounds in pure water or PBS given they are present in culture media for example.
