Hi, I've been working on biosensor and for anionic interferences I am going to use cellulose acetate. I've tried preparing 5% solution using 1:1 acetone:ethanol as solvent. The solution was stirred for more than 1 hour and half but it looks like it was not homogenous at all and it starts to form precipitation after a while. It gets harder as the concentration is increased.
I am not sure if I'm using the apropos solvent for cellulose acetate. What solvent would be best to deal with cellulose acetate? Thanks

You may use the following solvents:
1-DMSO
2-THF
3-Dioxane
4-Acetone
5-Nitroethane
6-DMF
Please note that the solubility of cellulose acetate is largely dependent on the acetyl value.

Make 17% CA solution using 2:1 (Acetone/DMF).
for example: For 10 g stock polymer solution
take 1.7 g cellulose
2.76 g DMF
5.53 g Acetone
mix it for 6 hr using magnetic stirrer. Carefully cover the bottle to avoid solvent evaporation.
Dear all, I had a similar question. I've got a freeze dried CNC (cellulose nanocrystals) which has been hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid. I'd like to disperse this in an acrylic system (acrylate monomers which are hydrophobic and soluble in THF, Toluene, Chloroform, and dichloromethane) I've read a lot but kind of stuck in this! I've done the surface acetylation on CNCs but didn't work. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you very much in advance.

Cellulose can not be dissolved in acetone.
About this question topic- cellulose acetate solubility depends on its degree of substitution and the position of substituted group (-OAc) on AGU. Controlling by distribution of substituted groups you can reach your aim.
Cellulose and cellulose acetate has very different solubility. Cellulose acetate is highly soluble in acetone (tested with cigarette butt) but cellulose is not soluble in acetone.
