For the last several years AMC 2084, U.K. is known as Variable Energy X-ray source.
UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY
When Rb XRF source (AMC 2084, U.K.) was kept directly on bare photomultiplier tube 9635QB of Thorn EMI, spectacularly 125 381 cps were noticed instead of the expected 8800 Rb X-ray photon yield sec-1 steradian-1'. The surprise finding led to previously unexplored area of research to know why these unaccountably high counts from Rb XRF source. Two independent optical techniques developed with narrow band optical filters and a pair of sheet polarizers confirmed that the excessive counts were due to UV dominant optical emission caused by Rb X-rays from within excited atoms of Rb XRF source. In comparison to the optical emission intensities from other XRF sources and radioisotopes tested, Rb source showed excess UV counts than the expected X-ray yield, so it can also be addressed as a low intense UV source.
