In my process, metal is melted in a crucible while the mould is simultaneously heated. Once the metal reaches the desired state, a steel billet is inserted into the mould and lowered. The stopper then opens, allowing molten metal to flow into the mould around the billet and begin solidifying. The mould temperature is tracked in simulations to validate the process, as the exact solidification front location is uncertain.

Simulation Progress:

  • Setup: Incorporated the crucible, mould, and fluid domain into the model. Time-dependent heat transfer with phase change is included.
  • Studies:Heat transfer simulation for the initial heating phase. Melt flow simulation using laminar flow, heat transfer, and non-isothermal flow. This setup works as intended so far.

Next Steps:I want to simulate the dynamic effects of the fluid and moving billet. As the billet moves downward, molten metal should flow into the mould, and the solidified portion should move with it. I plan to use a moving mesh to capture these interactions. Any suggestions on how to implement this in COMSOL are greatly appreciated.
