I made a Nessler's reagent by adding a saturated solution of HgCl2 to a solution of KI (2/5g KI in 2/5cc dH2O) until an orange precipitate formed. Then I added 20cc 9M KOH and finally added dH2O to 50cc. But adding the KOH solution resulted in all of the precipitate dissolving. Is that the correct outcome or must the precipitate be stable?
