Academics may know the ICMJE guidelines, i.e., the ICMJE Recommendations, that are widely used by global academia:

1. The ICMJE has no hierarchical structure, has one secretary (Dr. Darren B. Taichman), with a secretariat at the American College of Physicians (ACP) in Philadelphia.
2. There are only about 12 “official” ICMJE members, but none of them hold any stated position within the ICMJE:

3. Over 3000 journals claim to follow the ICMJE Recommendations. However, the ICMJE states that:
“The ICMJE cannot verify the completeness or accuracy of this list. There may be some journals that follow the ICMJE recommendations, but have never requested listing. There may be some listed journals that do not follow all of the many recommendations and policies in the document.” This means that the ICMJE wants boast large numbers of compliant members but does not want to take responsibility if any of those members are non-compliant.
4. A PDF file of 17 pages of rules for ethics and publishing, is being forcefully applied to, in some cases, millions of biomedical scientists around the world by select societies, journals and publishers.
What do academics think about the ICMJE, and do they think that so few individuals should weild so much influence?
