A reasonable blend of formal and informal interactions is good for the academic and social developments of the relationship between the lecturer and student.
When a PhD candidate is treated as a colleague in training, the relationship is always on a professional basis, where the individual and their work is held in respect. The supervisor recognises that their role is to guide through the morass of regulation and requirements, offer suggestions and do some teaching around issues such as methodology, research practice and process, and be sensitive to the life-cycle of the PhD process. The experience for both the supervisor and student should be one of acknowledgement of each other, recognising the power differential but emphasising the support at this time. This is the best of supervision.

It can sometimes be informal and it may have positive impact on student.
It should be a natural combination of formal and informal. I invite my students over to my house for dinner so that they can interact with me outside the classroom and get to know my wife and son.
In a research lab all working students and supervisor have to maintain family atmosphere in good sense. Relation can be formal at sometimes.
The world isn't black or white because there are always gray areas. Inofmality sometimes enhances the level of respect students have for their supervisor.

Academic relations must take the formal interaction of most of them, while certain situations according to their circumstances can take informal interaction.
I think it should be both because sometimes we can get the best from our research student when they are very free with us.
I think there are two dimensions to the supervisory role: the professional and the humane. While the professional role demands subscribing to the formal conventions of meeting standards, the humane aspect addresses the issues of empathy, understanding, moral support and motivation that the supervised needs to carry out his/her task.
I have tried both approaches in the far past & found out a good "recipe": The supervisor ought to be more formal allowing a margin for informality. If the supervisor becomes too informal, the student may be encouraged to become more relaxed in work "spoiled", more dependent on the supervisor, and thinking that success is almost guaranteed.
Yes, striking the balance between the two dimensions is an important element of the equation!
