It is better to carry out extraction of DNA and RNA in separate biosafety hood, especially when one is dealing with patient samples. It is possible to do both DNA and RNA extractions in the same biosafety cabinet from research point of view. But for diagnostic purpose, one must be extra careful with regards to contamination such as RNA sample being contaminated with DNA and vice versa. So, I would recommend you carry out DNA and RNA extraction in separate biosafety cabinets from diagnostic point of view.
It is better to extract DNA and RNA in separate laminar hood to decrease DNA/RNA contamination. I recommend that use 10% sodium hypochlorite to clean the surface of laminar hood and use 20 min UV light.
