According to the Hooke's law, we have: F = -k*deltax.Here, F is force and deltax is the change of spring length. In other words, when you pull a spring 20mm or compress it 20mm, the amount of force (F) is the same but the direction of forces is different. In pulling, the force has negative sign, In compressing, it has positive sign. It means that when you pull the spring, the direction of force is inwards and negative and when you compress it the force direction is outwards and positive. In this law, the only important thing is the change of spring length. It doesn't matter how you define the initial length of spring. Fore example, you can define the initial length of 70cm. In pulling, add values to the length (deltax is positive) and for compressing subtract values from the length (deltax is negative). To determine the initial length of spring, according to the physical properties of the spring, you can also find some general mechanical standards that factories and manufacturers use in their productions.
