Does anyone know about an open-source software that allows to measure lung volumes based on lung density?

Hm do not know about a specialized software for that but you could have a look at at imageJ or Mipav. There are probably some segmentation algorithms. Otherwise you will hve to implement your own tool. What kind of images do you have ?
They are DICOM images, of images with a B20 and b70 reconstruction algorithm. Thank you, I will look at Mipav. I already have looked in imageJ and so far haven't found anything.

Maybe have a look at Slicer 3D - it can import DICOM data and should allow you to perform your stuff.

That is correct and all comercial versions, base their assessment on that principle, but so far I haven't found an open-source software that allows something like that.
Volumetric analysis are done on Ct imaging.The software can be accessed by choosing the correct volume depending on the examintion done.
Yes hounsefield units offer measurements and volumetric analysis can be done by choosing the volume rendering control.
Osirix (http://www.osirix-viewer.com) is able to do the job. Lung segmentation is straight forward with Osirix.
Drawback: It runs only under OsX.
