We would like to isolate resistant bacteria from soil however, only certain species has established their epidemiological cut-off values or clinical breakpoints. Any method for initial isolation of resistant bacteria from soil? How to determine are they resistant or not?

Thank you for the answer. Yes I think that chromogenic media are one of the choice for isolation for some genus/families of resistant bacteria. The problem is that such media include only certain antimicrobials but we don't know about resistance of the isolates to other classes of antimicrobials.

Is there any specific compound that you are concentrating on to study the microbial resistance?
If it is multiple antibiotic resistant strains you are interested in, you can do an enrichment culture where you can incorporate the drug of your choice in the particular concentration and inoculate the soil samples in to it. After a period, you can isolate strains which are resistant to that particular compound from the enrichment culture.
And to determine whether they are resistant or not, you can do a disc diffusion test or tube dilution test.

Antimicrobial discs are not suitable as we don't know an interpertation criteria (what zone should be in mm to say that certain isolate is resistant)...The same is for tube dilution. In that case we could only to say what concentration of antimicrobial is able to kill the isolate...
