Do all Candida species growth on the selective media Hicrome M1297A or 1456A except C albicans, C. krusei, C.tropicalis and C.glabrata ? What about any other Candida species?
What media do you suggest to select all Candida species?
We use Chrome agar for speciation of Candida. I think the manufacturers have only incorporated some of the ingredients selectively utilised by some of the species of Candida. The specific ingredients for identifying certain other species are not incorporated in the media. Hence, you cannot identify all species of Candida. Moreover, some of the biochemical tests are common for some of the species of Candida. If these chemicals are incorporated in the media, it may not help to distinguish between species. That is why the chrome agar is useful only for identifying some Candida species. In my lab we use chrome agar which identifies C.albicans, C.glabrata, C.tropicalis and C.krusei.
Also, one of the best ways to identify and speciate Candida is the Corn Meal Agar (CMA). We use it to supplement the results of Chrome agar. In this, one can study the morphology in situ and identify the species.
The books recommend TTC agar too for speciation, though we did not have satisfactory results with this.
