I recently obtained a hardcopy of Gloer (2019). The Freshwater gastropods of the West-Palaearctis. On page 329 a species of Gastropod i.e. Segmentina oelandica (Westerlund, 1885) (should have been described as Planorbis nitidus var oelandica Westerlund) was added as accepted species. I have never heard of this species but as the distributionmap showed its presence in my country (Netherlands) I need to be sure about this taxon. In WoRMS or Molluscabase there is no such species. So what is the current status of Segmentina oelandica?, accepted or a synonym of S. nitida, a common species in our country.

I have problems with this (and other) species of Glöer (2019) as well. In moment I would say it is a synonym of S. nitida without any deeper insight into the Westerlund taxon.

The taxonomy of Segmentina nitida s. lato needs a revision. Historically, some conchological varieties have been delineated within it (e.g. Segmentina nitida var. distinguenda). As far as I know, some recently obtained molecular data shows Segmentina nitida s.lato comprises at least two distinct species in Europe. It remains unpublished, though. Therefore I feel it is quite probable that we have more than a single Segmentina species in Europe but a special study is needed to find the proper names. Maxim Vinarski I think the study you mention is mine from my PhD research, with the manuscript in prep., and I am looking to submit it soon. This is indeed correct, I found two distinct genetic lineages of Segmentina nitida s. lato, with no presence of genetic admixture using 7 microsatellite markers, COI and ITS2. These results were also backed up through geometric morphometrics of shell morphology, predicting correct species through shell morphology approx 85% of the the time. I agree there is likely to be multiple species of Segmentina across Europe, especially in light of Kantor 2015 (Catalogue of the continental mollusks of Russia and adjacent territories) which lists 14 species of Segmentina, and Kruglov and Soldatenko 1997, which contains the most recent descriptions within the genus, which I've just received a copy of, and am currently working through the anatomical data. I'm actually looking to fully describe this 'new' species, and see if any of the previously accepted names correlate with it, and am trying to gain access to any of the fresh material from the previous study to get reference genetic data for each described species, but have struggled to find contact details for either of the authors. I think it could make an interesting taxonomic project including morphological, genetic, and anatomical data, potentially a cool collaborative project.
Ton van Haaren - unfortunately my study has no samples included in in from the Netherlands. I did have some collected from the north but I struggled to get any decent amplification for inclusion in my analyses. I'd be happy to look at any fresh samples you may have and see if I have more success with newer samples and see which genetic lineage they align with.
To summarize it a bit, there is a growing evidence that Segmentina nitida s. lato represents a complex of at least two distinct forms which may be dubbed "species". There is a need to find if there are any stable morphological difference between them to attach the proper taxonomic names. As concerns Kruglov & Soldatenko (1997) study, I do not believe that we have such a high number of species as these authors claimed but some of species names resurrected in their paper may be of interest for the further taxonomic formalizations within the species complex. I am very curious about which conclusions we will reach in the nearest future.
Thank you all for this information. It is not unlikely that Naturalis museum in Leiden already barcode Dutch Segmentina. Nevertheless I Will try to collect, or I'll ask Dutch colleagues for fresh Segmentina. Let me know if you would be interested in ethanol material. The material Will be at most 1 year old.
