I want to build a theory based on Van de Ven approach which suggests that building a theory includes three activities:

1- Theory conceiving and abduction is used to this stage

2- Theory construction and deductive is used

3- Theory testing and inductive is used.

However, it is not clear to me how can we sample based Van de Ven approach. I mean in the case of grounded theory and case study, we follow a theatrical sampling strategy, based on the emerging theory, to develop our concepts and constructs, and the relationships between the core categories. Can we follow the same procedures if we follow Van de Ven approach?

I have two sets of data; secondary (documents) and primary (multi cases). I finished analyzing my documents and ended up with a typology of the observed phenomenon. Now, can I use this typology to inform my cases selection?

Thanx a lot
