I am conducting a study examining the effects of sounds on face perception, using a 3 x 3 design: 3 sound conditions (sound1, sound2, sound3) and 3 gaze directions (left, direct, right). I am considering two different analysis approaches:

Option 1: Run a 3 x 3 repeated measures ANOVA (this would account for both sound and gaze direction as within-subject factors);

Option 2: Run two separate ANOVAs:

a) 2 (sound1, sound2) x 3 (gaze left, direct, right) repeated measures ANOVA on the sound conditions only,

and b) one-way ANOVA on the silent trials only to assess gaze direction without sound effects.

I would like to ask for advice on sample size calculation using G*Power for each of the approaches, specifically:

  • For the 3 x 3 repeated measures ANOVA, I would calculate the required sample size for a 2-factor within-subjects design;
  • For the separate ANOVAs approach, I assume, I would need to calculate the sample size for the silent trials separately, using a one-way ANOVA, and then calculate the sample size for the sound conditions (2 x 3 design). Should I then combine these sample sizes, or would the larger sample size from either analysis be sufficient?

Any guidance on the sample size calculation process in G*Power, would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Tatiana
