It is some times observed that culture of HVS ( high vaginal swab) is advised from some junior doctors. There are a number of organisms those are related with the infections of female genitalia, including bacteria, parasite, virus and fungus. Most of these organism will not grow in routine culture media. As for example, Gardenella vaginalis, which is a common cause of vaginosis and is an anaerobic organism. In routine aerobic culture it will not grow. There are a number of other organisms related with infections of female genitalia, will not grow in routine culture media. Even gonococcus, which is aerobic organism, needs selective media to culture from female genitalia, to interpret correctly, because there other non gonococcal neisseria present as commensal in female genitalia. So, routine culture of HVS in not recommended.

Rather microscopy including gram staining and wet film preparation will be helpful.
