The demands of scientific production, transformed into publications, have always been part of the researchers' concerns. Often, we are faced with the challenge of sending a production - resulting from a case study - to a certain magazine and with high quality, but with a response time of more than one year. Therefore, two variables: the good qualification, if accepted and the response time, that can decrease the validity of the obtained data, but more if it results in rejection.

Dear @Osmar, thanks for sharing the question. Personally, response time varies and depends on many factors. Fast publication was interested only during promotion time at University. The important dates of our last paper this year follow: Received 22 Mar 2016, Accepted 18 May 2017, Published online: 26 Jun 2017! 15 months!!!

I fully agree with Aristidis's answer. However, I would like to emphasize that waiting a long time to see that submissive work is rejected with unclear motivations is frustrating. Thank you for the question. For research/PG students, response time for acceptance/rejection is important in many situations. As the course is time bounded, taking too much time to get a result on the submitted article is not affordable. However, most of the journals now takes a maximum of one year to complete the process, which is necessary for a good review- publication process.

When submitting an article to a scientific journal, some points should be consider:
1- The aim of the researcher from publishing this article.
2- The qualification of the journal.
3- The response time of the journal.
4- The quality of the article.
5- The fees.
For me, I observe the average response time. Sometimes it becomes important.
Time frame for a publication is quite important. I remember an incident about my submission. the article was not accepted by a journal due to appearance of an article having same topic in another journal, although our submission was 2 months earlier than the published article submission.
In my experience, journal review times tend to vary by field of study, with some journals responding within 1 month and others taking even up to 8 months. Many journals mention their expected review times on their websites: for example, Elsevier states that most of its journals communicate decisions to authors within 4 months. Response time for acceptance or rejection of articles in scientific journals is shown in Guidelines to Author of any journal, it may be:
1. Six to eight weeks from the day of submission
2. Some journals take six months
3. Some journals take more than that
I consider before submitting the paper, whether journal is indexed on SCOPUS and Isi Thomson Reuters, etc.
One great challenge for all humans, including researchers, is cultivating a waiting attitude to see one's research findings in the public domain via publishing in a journal. I think journals must sit up and work on the time span it often takes to make decisions regarding the acceptance/rejection of papers submitted to their outfit. I understand the rigorous processes that papers must go through to shape them to be able to articulate the objectives of the paper well and to meet the wider acceptance of scholars globally.
The tracking systems adopted by many journals must be able to give prompt updates to the researcher on the stage of his/her paper publication to ease their anxiety. I think it is worth waiting for a great deal of time if the final manuscript evaluation from reviewers is thorough, genuine and reflective of the paper.
The chief editors must constantly update authors about their paper submissions. Failure on the part of giant journals to respond promptly to the calls of authors have to lead to many embracing the new journals whose review procedures are fast and rigorous. We must also admit that rigor in the peer review process is not always associated with the longer periods a paper stays with a reviewer. Rather, it is the unbiased, objective and comprehensiveness of the review that matters.

Yes. for me, 1-1.5 months (from submission to know acceptance/rejection). Some top journals (ex. Science) can reject your manuscript within a week, direct rejection from the Editor, without even going out for reviewing.

Yes I do consider the response time of a journal as one of the crucial parameters while selecting the suitable journals for my article.
As per my view quality of review is most important for establishing the credibility of any scientific journal, and a genuine review process does take reasonable time. But, I think 3-4 months is a reasonable amount of time for scrutinizing any article.
In some cases journals take 8-10 months just to show they are genuine as they are taking time, but don't give quality review. So, what I mean to disagree with is the misconception that "if a journal's review cycle is too long, it must be genuine".

If the turnaround time for a said journal is disclosed, I do observe it. I have also asked editorial assistants the time it takes to review and make a decision on papers. I will not ordinarily submit to journals that take long.

Hello everyone! The topic remains open to suggestions and contributions. In my case, I have two articles that have been submitted for more than a year and without any response from the magazines. These are case studies, with research on regional samples and certainly are no longer in place. Therefore, I understand that there should be a limit to the manifestation of publication or rejection. Thank you all!
I have the similar experience like Osmar. I have submitted the article on the beginning of September 2016, after a year I got confirmation it is accepted and it will be published. Later the editor does not replay on my emails.

This questioning has resulted in great contributions. In my case, I am observing, more and more, the response time of the publications. Recently, after more than two years of submission, I had an article declined on the grounds that the survey data was outdated. That is, the magazine "kept" my study for a long time and refused it for that. Unfortunate!

Yes, the time of response is a variable one must consider because many researches have, in some sense, a certain caducity, if not for your own interest, yes for effective consequences in the researcher career.
I observe the journal topic is adequate for my paper and also take a look at the journal metrics (response time, acceptance rate,...) when available.

We always have the choice to make. Most of this scientific high impact journals take too long for review and the worst of it all is when it eventually comes with rejections. Much time would have been wasted. I support the fact that it should be regulated

Yes, time for response is very important. I consider it, but it is not the unique variable to consider. Quality of the referees criterium, quality of final published result, do not loss time inusefully, etc. are other variables which influence in my decisions.
