I have much experience in software development project management. My current concern is the "dumbing down" of software project management. I see Agile methodology as an advanced technique rather than a two day course to train individuals. I think an interesting research project is the knowledge capability of project managers. As the US Federal Govt is mandating PMP certification, the distinct geographical locations of UK, with the prince2-ification of training project managers against the USA PMP certified might make an interesting study.

I think a much simpler analysis of effectiveness might be of how Scope , time and cost is set and monitored over the life of the project. The 2 day course agilists pretend that cost is not a criteria and scope just balloons.

Some real world examples around a shift from more traditional project management to simpler forms of project management using Kanban and task management. The project management software industry has changed significantly in recent years and some research on the success rate of traditional project management compared to simplified project management would be very beneficial.

Here some ideas:

Transfer of agile PM to other sectors:

How could agile PM methods be transfered to other more regulated environments, e.g. university research projects? How are agile project contracts negotiated and implemented in public services with their purchasing procedures?

Tailoring of PM:

What of agile theory is actually implemented in practice and what is adapted over time? Where are actual problems, and how could they be solved by hybrid PM?

Simplification of Software:

How can PM software be simplified to the minimum necessary level for maximum efficiency? How could practitioners decide for the tailored functions they need?
