Most of the climate models are written in FORTRAN, maybe you can find some references about the Hybrid programming (coding). One thing I have done many years ago is to call programs in other language after transferring them into Dynamic link library (dll) files.

I think R package ‘wux’ can help you in this regard. They incorporate methods to calculate and interpret climate change signals and time series from climate multi-model ensembles.
