I have been tasked to design an experiment where i react benzoic acid and thionyl chloride to form benzoyl chloride( which will be used to react with glycine).However, i am unsure of what precautions i need to take note of and how to purify the benzoyl chloride after reaction. I am supposed to use 100mg(0.07874ml) of benzoic acid(which i assume is the limiting reagent?) to react with excess thionyl chloride.
You need to keep moisture away from reaction. Normally benzoyl choride after reaction contains excess thionyl chloride.which is removed by repetitive solvent (tripping)distillation such as MDC (dichloromethane). then if needed benzoyl choride can be distilled to get pure benzoyl chloride.
Reacton between benzoic acid and thionyl chloride to form benzoyl chloride is SNi type of reaction. It is clorination of benzoic acid to form benzoyl chloride.The reaction should be carried out in a fume hood as lot of fumes of HCl are evolved. Other bi-product is SO2 in the reaction. Excess of thionyl chloride should be removed by distillation under vacuum.
