RG can be and is used sometimes by participants like FB, which I do not value.
From a scientific viewpoint, it can be used as a global learning platform to explore and share the methodical diversity of research approaches. RG adds to scientific pluralism, freedom and communication (=sharing is caring).
Of course, RG is a scientific research platform that has scientific research objectives that are completely different from the social media platform, such as FaceBook, and it is not right that Discuss non-scientific subjects.

Md. Saidur - Surely, usage of RG is not similar to Facebook and they are poles apart from each other in nature, scope, focus and users. ResearchGate is a social networking site for scientists where researchers share papers, ask and answer questions, and find collaborators. Facebook is not the relevant platform for scientists and researchers for sharing their research findings because a significant level of users of Facebook are also low level educated people. It is mostly relevant for business and individuals, such as making a group, chatting with clients, making an event, wall stickers, reliable platforms, news feed, etc.
Ofcourse it should not be like your FB account but now a days people are too much addicted in social media, at the some extent positively it is helpful... RG is the gateway for sharing and knowing the knowledge... If you love to do research then you should be addicted like your FB newsfeed scrolling in RG also. You can share, post, give answer but it should be obviously research oriented...it's a global platform, so your minimum honest input can help to so many enthusiastic honest researchers...
RG is not intended to be like Facebook. However, users decide...Unfortunately, there is a shift towards quantity instead of quality due to the scoring system.
Exactly!! RG is different in many aspects/facets like participitans(research or research related people, not ordinary public) sharing ideas, projects, raw data and papers.... intelligent and productive discussions , constructive criticism amongst the members, etc.
If you intend to patent your ideas then it is advisable to avoid on research gate as it will be counted as existing knowledge and your patent application may be rejected
For me RG is a forum where I can ask/answer scientific questions. It is a source of a vast scientific literature of published work that I can consult anytime of the day without going to the university library. Moreover if I have further questions I can contact directly the author(s) of publication(s). Face Book does not give me this opportunity.
