With the papers attached below, TGA can be used for proximate analysis =)

May I ask something? I found that TG of biomass in my experiments gave the data that the material decompose totally before 800 celsius degree, so it is dificult to know the char and volatile composition. I also found the sumilar data for grass and softwood. Could someone please gave me information to solve this problem?

may I ask which study you mean in point (2):

(2) characterisation to determine char's specific surface area, porosity and pore size distribution measurements (Gulzad, 2011).

I would be interested in SSA determination with a TGA but have never heard of it.

Hi Christian, after reading over and over again on Gulzad's work, i think i've totally misinterpreted his work. Sorry! Below shows the actual context.

"Samples of solid residue were taken for its characterization by thermo gravimetric measurements, specific surface area, porosity and pore size distribution measurements, and ASTM standard tests for carbon black."

Teo Raymond , I might be late in this posting, but have you found accurate results using TGA for proximate analysis?

I have done some experimental runs to compute proximate analysis component through TGA, however, the content of fixed carbon obtained is much lower than that presented in the literature. The explanation might be the fact that doing the analysis using the ASTM standard procedure the sample is suddenly heat from ambient temperature to 950°C in fraction of minutes, while in the TG it is heat slowly til' the 900 our more.
