KNOWLEDGE! Research is a tool by which scientists can test their own, and each others' theories to find an answer and advance knowledge. The purpose of research is really an ongoing process of correcting and refining hypotheses, which should lead to the acceptance of certain scientific truths.
The main purpose of research is to identify the underlying reasons for the problems faced by humanity and to find proactive means of addressing them to make life better.

As I see it, the main purpose of research is to advance knowledge and get a better knowledge of the unknown in any area of knowledge. The great minds and researchers were those who were able to raise what I call "irritating questions", that is, questions that challenge the mainstream and the status quo, and whose answer leads us to better knowledge of the unknown. Needless to say, any research end us by showing us there will always be an unknown to be known
To make conjectures and submit them to the Popperian test of falsifiabilty is, say, the fabric of what science and reseserch are made of
