I like the subject and the word sustainable means meeting the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable design is the systematic consideration, during design, of a project’s life cycle impact on environmental and energy resources. By definition, the overarching tenet of sustainable design is to use resources efficiently and within their renewable limits. While responsible stewardship of the environment is important, sustainable design also provides a better physical environment for students and staff at lower life cycle costs of the projects.
The main objectives of sustainable design are to reduce, or completely avoid depletion of critical resources like energy, water, and raw materials; prevent environmental degradation caused by facilities and infrastructure throughout their life cycle; and create built environments that are livable, comfortable, safe, and productive .Sustainable design advocates commonly encourage retrofitting existing buildings rather than building anew. Retrofitting an existing building can often be more cost-effective than building a new facility. Designing major renovations and retrofits for existing buildings to include sustainable design attributes reduces operation costs and environmental impacts, and can increase building resiliency.
The first steps for a sustainable and high-performance building design include:
· Creating a vision for the project and setting design & Construction performance goals.
· Outlining important first steps to take in achieving a sustainable design.
· Create a healthy indoor environment that will result in reduced absenteeism while boosting productivity.
