I am designing a student profiling system (in university level technical education) in which student competencies are mapped and used for further intervention. I want to test achievement motivation, study habits, Engineering aptitude and English proficiency. I have selected the following tests. Are these good enough? Which can use for English proficiency.
1. Study Habit Inventory by M.N. Palsane and S. Sharma
2. Engineering Aptitude Test Battery by Swarn Pratap
3. English Language Proficiency Test by K S Misra & Ruchi Dubey

It is quite difficult to provide a categorical response, given that the examples you cited are not available for public view. It will be helpful if the tests are made available so that their characteristics (validity, reliability, objectivity, comprehensiveness...) may be studied as the basis of responses to your questions.

as i mentioned earlier the purpose of student profiling is:
1. identify students for extra training and counselling.
2. identify high performing students for extra booster classes
3. identify students at risk of dropping out of the course
Can i achieve this with the tests mentioned above?
has any one has any experience in psychological
profiling of students.
This is very important subject dealt with narrow approach !!!
Like clinical test / trials in medicine,
Psychometric tests and student profiling / competency mapping.... are there any data to show HOW THE RESULTS CO RELATE WITH ACTUAL / REALITY after some time lag,
Or are these mere reports / Numbers of no significance in real life.

There is data to show that Achievement motivation and study habits have a significant impact on the out of exam results. when achievement motivation is coupled with good aptitude the results are encouraging (from the view point of an education institution)English proficiency has an impact on employability of a person..
I haven't found any data on psychometric test used in university level education for training need identification. That is why i have posted on this forum. Do let me know if you know any research in this area ?
I know this is completely new and i am trying this on a pilot basis. If it works out, i will generate a research paper based on this.
As of now it is for the use of student training need identification.
It's great you are wanting your students to succeed and using tests to identify how best to assist them. A test before the semester, starts to check their level of knowledge for the study unit, should yield useful information.
I don't know how many students you have, but talking to them or emailing them during the semester, is another way to get targeted information.
If students have a medical condition or personal hardships that limits their capacity to achieve, they may need extra resources, usually provided by the university through a social equity department.

i am opposed to any test beneficial to STUDENTS.
however, let there be documentary evidence to prove or otherwise the usefulness.
Beside being associated with Education, i am also in to Executive Search co providing service for HR requirement at all levels - Managers to CFO/ CEO.
There is no any test to guarantee Placement as MANY COMPLEX issues play significant part.
Its time to study from the available PAST TEST RECORDS analyse and work further.

I agree with some of the previous commenters: the only way to know if these will be good measures is to see how your pilot goes and whether there is any correlation between scores and actual performance. That said, it sounds like you have a pretty good sense of what would constitute a student needing additional support, ready for more challenging work etc -- that, to me is what it is really essential if you are going to profile. So, if you can identify four or five important cognitive traits of a student who needs help, and you feel the measures you list measure constructs related to those traits, and you feel good about the psychometric properties of the measures, then you're probably on the right track to building your profiles.
I was wondering if you think it would be good to include a measure of self-efficacy in your profiles?

I fail to understand, why no where in World - this test is not included in final year of Syllabus !!!
