I am recently indulged in a project to utilize hydrocarbons fuels meaningfully (high performance and durability) directly in the SOFCs.
While the initial results of activity are promising, the main issue while using Ethanol in a electrolyte supported SOFC is with carbon coking/carbon deposition. I am targeting a degradation rate of less than 2% for a 3000hrs durability test. Can anyone suggest any modifications, from thermodynamic point of view, to inhibit this carbon deposition.

Come what may........any method of coking will have some degree of carbon deposition. Only thing you may try is to prevent over heating. Now this term of over-heating is very important. Remember that when you are controlling the energy supply in a process like coking, there will several exothermic reactions which will add energy to the process.Try to identify the major ones, and accordingly control your heating process, it will reduce to some extent (sometime very significantly) the carbon deposition.

Thank you for the answer. The main heating reaction is of course the catalyzation of the fuel. Which is bound to happen. I could however reduce the operating temperature. I am looking into some fuel cell structural control options as well.
