Please tell me how to remove oxide layer on the GCE surface and what could be the reason for forming oxide layer on the GCE surface.?
I have polished with alumina slurry, but the layer was not removed
If you irreversibly oxidized GCE electrode for forming oxide layer on the GCE surface. You can polish with alumina slurry, but the oxide layer layer is more difficult removed.
It is quite difficult to form an oxide layer on GCE, but you will have to polish it again, and during the electrochemistry experiment bubble nitrogen or argon in the solution to prevent the oxide formation.
Applying some reduction potential to GCE in acidic medium may eliminate the oxidised species than you can polish as normaly with you standard procedures. But while applying that you should take care of your GCE. If you applied high voltage or increase in time will lead to destroy the surface of GCE.

Try to polish on Emery paper 5/0 or 6/0 and then alumina slurry. you will surely get fresh GC surface.
